Spring 2015 Page 13 Demolition to Dream

Once in a while, an incredible opportunity knocks. In this story, the knock was almost a knockdown: a derelict house in the town of Chico, California, where Shawn and Monika had been looking for a home to buy. They loved the beautiful neighborhood, the huge backyard, and the asking price. So they bought the least attractive house on the block. Shawn and Monika planned to tackle as much of the demolition and the remodel as they could, and to hire subcontractors as needed. Even if the house hadnt been in dreadful condition, the floor plan wasn't inviting. They hired an architect to open up the rooms and create a kitchen suited for entertaining. And then they settled down to making dozens and dozens of decisions. Heres how Build.com was able to help Shawn and Monika realize their dream. SHAWN ROLLS UP HIS SLEEVES (AND GETS SOME EXPERT ADVICE) Shawn has always enjoyed learning by doing. He likes taking things apartand putting them back together. He rates his skill level as fairly handy, and sums up his DIY attitude boldly: I figure there isn't really anything that I can mess up that cant be i xed, so why not just do it? Shawn and Monika had a not-so-secret weapon against DIY remorse: a product expert at Build.com named Stephanie Goodman. She was available throughout the project to help them with just about everything (except elbow grease). Stephanie works with customersDIYers, contractors, and designerson orders of all sizes. She also handles shipping updates, delivery logistics, and returns (such as Shawn and Monika's surplus boxes of flooring at the end of the remodel). For a project with as many moving parts as Shawn and Monikas, Stephanies skills were useful on three fronts: comparing and contrasting products; fine-tuning specifications on products with options; and sequencing orders so that everything arrived as it was needed. Shawn and Stephanie communicated mostly via email (Shawns preferred mode), speaking on the phone when anything needed to be discussed back-and-forth.
